When everything goes wrong...

Life doesn’t always…

go the way we plan it. We can envision exactly how we would like something to be, but the truth is with kids, as we all know, sometimes things just don’t go as we’d wish.

This can be especially disappointing when it happens during a portrait session. We’ve arranged the cake, the balloons, the perfect outfits. We can imagine the smiles, laughter, cute expressions of our babies, now one (how did that happen), licking up delicious frosting and squealing with glee. But instead, unexpectedly, things start to unravel and go from bad to worse.

So, what should we do?  I think the key to any successful session is first making sure your expectations are where they should be. That goes for the photographer, me, and the parents, you.  In this case we had twin, TWIN, one-year-old boys.  What are chance things will go 100% smoothly?  Well, not very good. BUT, if expectations are right then we can all still have fun and capture some amazing, emotional and memorable images.

This cake smash was off to a bad start from the beginning. One of our little guys just wasn’t having from the get-go.  But kudos to mom and dad who took it in stride.  They did their very best to calm and control the boys but when that failed, and I suggested they just jump right in and be part of the festivities they were game!

This is what turned the session around. Instead of being upset and disappointed … we got laughter, love and a lot of messy clothes. Look at mom and dad’s pants… covered in frosting.

But you know what. They had fun and we were able to create a really memorable portfolio of their first birthday together as a family.  It was, I’m sure, not what they were expecting when they walked into the studio but because they were willing to go with the flow and have fun with it…… everything turned out wonderful!

Sometimes you have to just let go and embrace every moment … good or bad, happy or sad it’s all part of life.
